Dingle Skellig Hotel Celebrates 50 Years With New Rooms

One of Dingles most iconic landmarks - Dingle Skellig Hotel celebrates 50 years this year with the completion of a multimillion development which includes 32 additional guest rooms including 5 stunning roof top guest rooms all with their own balconies taking in the panoramic views across Dingle Bay.

The design for the new rooms as well as the upgrade and redesign of The Blaskets Bar and Bistro was created by award winning Meitheal Design Partners in Cork.

Luke Hickson Partner with Meitheal and the lead architect commented “Our vision for the new build was to utilize the stunning views enjoyed from the Hotel. We wanted to remain true to the property but ensure it is ready for the next 50 years. The focus of the interior theme was very much on textures and a sense of craft that reflect the wild landscape beyond, with repeated natural motifs designed into the carpets and wall covering, timber and tiles. We have used stone and fabric in a way that allows a beautiful counterpoint to the sharp bay windows and the panoramic views.’’

The new bedroom addition includes 5 Deluxe Balcony Suites, 6 Deluxe Executive Sea View Suites, 16 Deluxe King Rooms and 5 Deluxe Family Rooms including a selection of interconnecting options.

The new bedroom extension and Atrium works at the hotel is the most significant work undertaken in the hotel since it was built in 1968 by Gaeltarra Eireann as an incentive to encourage job promotion and growth in Gaeltacht areas. A first of its kind the hotel included 48 en suite guest rooms and an outdoor swimming pool. 32 guest rooms were added on in quick succession to allow for the cast and crew of Ryans Daughter to take up residence. And in the 50 years the hotel has welcomed families from home and abroad. The hotel now boasts 152 guest rooms, swimming pool, gym, spa, childrens crèche and kids club, extensive banqueting facilities as well as the new relaxed dining spaces including The Atrium and The Binn Ban Brasserie.

The first phase of the internal refurbishment involved the redevelopment and design of The Blaskets Bar & Bistro. This area has now been transformed into two relaxed dining spaces - The Atrium and The Binn Ban Brasserie. The Atrium references traditional garden structures with the skylights to give a multi purpose space that connects all public areas of the hotel. Similarly The Binn Ban Brasserie uses bold colour and lighting to provide differing moods for breakfast and evening dining and using paneling and furniture Meitheal Design Partners create a cool but comfortable and cosy ambience.

With landscaping of the guest car parking and public exterior areas completing the development and refurbishment Dingle Skellig not only ready for the busy Summer season ahead but for the years to come.

Graham Fitzgerald, Dingle Skellig Hotel General Manager said “ We are very proud of what has been achieved in such a short space of time (Oct 2019 – May 2020). We look forward to welcoming guests to this very special part of the world – to stay with us, to eat with us, to enjoy their time in Dingle with us”.
